Handcrafted ceramic bowl featuring a magnificent winged horse, based on an original Iranian vessel from the late XII century, preserved at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
This bowl is a reconstruction of medieval Persian lustreware, a distinctive ceramic tradition celebrated for its sophisticated decoration and remarkable surface effects. The original was made in Iran during the late XII century, when Persian potters developed the artistic traditions introduced from Egypt and Syria into a distinctive local style.
The centrepiece is a striking winged horse, surrounded by an ornamental border. The bold composition and elegant mythical creature make this vessel a remarkable example of medieval Islamic ceramic art.
Two Colours, Two Interpretations
The original bowl has survived with its lustre decoration appearing predominantly brown. However, research into historical ceramic glazes and the chemical changes that occur over time suggests that the original surface may have looked significantly different when first produced.
Over the centuries, chemical processes within the glaze can alter its appearance. The original colour is therefore not necessarily identical to the colour we see today.
Based on this interpretation, we offer our reconstruction in two colour variations:
-
Brown — inspired by the appearance of the surviving museum original, preserving the warm, earthy tones visible today.
-
Blue — representing a plausible reconstruction of the bowl's original appearance, based on the hypothesis that its glaze was originally blue before undergoing chemical changes over time.
Both versions offer a different perspective on the same historical object: one reflects the appearance it has acquired over the centuries, while the other explores how it may have looked in the hands of its original maker.
