A reconstruction based on a Fatimid / Byzantine sword from the collection of Dr. Lee Jones, X–XI century.

This historically accurate reconstruction represents a rare type of early medieval sword associated with the Fatimid Caliphate and the Byzantine Empire. These swords were used across a vast geographical area – from Eastern Europe and the Balkans to Syria and Egypt – reflecting intense cultural exchange between the Arab and Byzantine worlds.

This type belongs to a unique group of early medieval battle-ready swords, combining eastern and western design features. Surviving originals are extremely rare, making this form one of the most distinctive and sought-after sword types of the 10th–11th century.

A key feature of this sword is the cast hilt with a characteristic cuff extending over the blade, short quillons and a compact pommel. This construction is strongly linked to Arabic swordsmanship techniques, allowing enhanced control of the weapon, including the use of the index finger over the guard.

The blade is broad, powerful and without a fuller, with a pronounced taper and sharp point, making it highly effective for both cutting and thrusting combat. This makes the sword not only historically accurate, but also fully functional and suitable for historical reenactment and combat use.
