Historical context:
Mail armor was the most commonly used form of protection during the early Middle Ages. It consisted of thousands of interconnected rings, either fully riveted or in a mixed pattern of riveted and punched (solid) rings. Archaeological finds show ring diameters ranging from 4 to 12 mm. Mail aventails were attached to helmets and protected the sides of the head and neck. Historical sources indicate that open aventails were the most common in Europe, while closed types are mostly seen in depictions of Asian warriors.
