Frankish Knee Strap – Lejre, Grave 1058
A reconstruction of a Frankish-style knee strap based on a pair of buckles and strap-ends discovered in Grave 1058 at Lejre, Zealand, Denmark. The original fittings are dated to approximately 900–950 AD.
Although the design is identified as Frankish, its presence in a Danish grave provides fascinating evidence that such objects were acquired, adopted and worn within Scandinavian society during the Viking Age. The piece reflects the cultural exchange and movement of prestigious goods between the Frankish and Danish worlds.
The strap features richly ornamented metal fittings and a narrow leather construction consistent with its historical function as a knee strap.
