Hand-Woven Leg Wrappings – Authentic Early Medieval Winigas

A pair of hand-woven leg wrappings (winigas) made from 100% natural wool, crafted for those who value true historical accuracy and traditional craftsmanship.

These leg wrappings are based on early medieval sources and iconography, where they appear extensively across Europe — commonly depicted alongside hose/trousers in manuscripts, carvings, and other visual evidence from the period.

Unlike many mass-produced alternatives, our leg wrappings are:

  • Hand-woven from start to finish
  • Plant-dyed using natural dyes
  • Woven directly to their final dimensions

They are NOT cut from larger fabric and sewn, which is unfortunately a common modern shortcut with no basis in historical finds.

This method ensures:

  • structural integrity
  • correct edge finishing
  • full consistency with early medieval textile practices

 Specifications

  • Dyeing: plant-dyed (natural dyes)

  • Width: approx. 10 cm
  • Set includes: 1 pair (2 pieces)

 Historical Use

Leg wrappings were widely used during the 10th–11th centuries across early medieval Europe — by warriors, travelers, and common people alike. They provided:

  • insulation and protection from cold and moisture
  • support for the lower leg during long marches
  • protection for trousers and footwear

A practical and essential element of historical clothing — not just decoration.
