This Silk Tunic is a historically grounded reconstruction inspired by the artistic and textile culture of the Caliphate of Córdoba (10th–early 11th century), with its ornamental pattern based on the famous Leyre Casket (AD 1004/1005).
The Caliphate of Córdoba represented one of the most refined courts of medieval Europe and the Islamic world. Luxurious silks, complex woven medallions, and royal workshops (tiraz ateliers) defined elite Andalusi dress. This tunic reflects that tradition of courtly elegance and visual authority.
The cut follows a wide, flowing early Islamic silhouette with straight body panels and generous width, allowing the silk fabric to drape naturally. The proportions are based on early medieval Andalusi and Islamic garments, avoiding later medieval tailoring or modern shaping. The result is a garment that emphasizes verticality, fluidity, and textile richness rather than fitted structure.
The most important element of this tunic is the textile and ornament.
The pattern is inspired by the decorative language of the Leyre Casket, a masterpiece of Andalusi ivory carving produced under the patronage of the Umayyad court. The repeating roundels, vegetal motifs, and courtly symbolism are translated into woven silk form, reflecting the same aesthetic vocabulary found in Andalusi luxury textiles.
The fabric is silk, chosen deliberately to reflect the prestige and ceremonial context of such garments. Silk production and imported luxury textiles were strongly associated with elite status in Al-Andalus. The drape, sheen, and depth of color recreate the visual impact characteristic of high-ranking court attire.
Tiraz on the Shoulders
This tunic includes tiraz bands placed on the shoulders — a defining feature of elite Islamic garments. Historically, tiraz were inscribed or decorated textile bands woven in official workshops and often associated with court patronage, honorific inscriptions, or symbolic legitimacy. Their placement on the upper sleeves or shoulders signified rank, proximity to power, and participation in courtly culture.
In this reconstruction, the tiraz bands are integrated into the garment in a manner consistent with early Islamic practice. They emphasize status and authenticity while maintaining structural harmony with the tunic’s flowing form.
