An apron dress called smokkr is a characteristic element of Scandinavian women's clothing, as well as some of the inhabitants of Kievan Rus. The widespread occurrence of such dresses in this cultural circle is evidenced by numerous finds of turtle brooches with remnants of loops preserved inside. The reconstruction of the cut is based on the development of fragments of dresses from Scandinavia, e.g. Danish (then) Hedeby. Archaeological sources indicate that they were most often made of wool. It was probably representative clothing of rich women - this is indicated by the remains of gilding and silvering preserved on brooches, as well as, for example, the discovery of fragments of an apron dress from Pskov in Ruthenia, which was decorated with silk.
ATTENTION! Turtle brooches are necessary to wear the dress, with which we fasten the loops on the shoulders.
The most important element of this dress is the fabric.
We use exclusively hand-woven wool textiles in a 2/2 twill weave, produced using traditional techniques. All fabrics are plant-dyed, resulting in natural, historically plausible colors consistent with early medieval dyeing practices. The twill weave provides strength, flexibility, and excellent thermal properties while remaining fully appropriate for early medieval reconstructions.
Our work combines archaeological evidence with iconographic sources—manuscript illustrations, reliefs, and early medieval visual representations—allowing us to create garments that are both source-based and functional.
