This Fatimid tunic is a historically grounded reconstruction based on an original textile preserved in the Ashmolean Museum collection (Jameel Centre for Islamic and Asian Art). The surviving garment is attributed to the Fatimid period (10th–12th century), most likely produced in Egypt, and represents the refined textile culture of the medieval Islamic world.
The cut reflects the simple, wide, and functional construction typical of early Islamic garments. The tunic is composed of straight body panels with broad sleeves and a loose silhouette, allowing ease of movement and ventilation in warm climates. The original example features woven decorative bands (tiraz) integrated into the structure of the garment rather than applied later, demonstrating both technical mastery and courtly textile traditions.
The most important element of this tunic is the fabric and decoration.
The original Fatimid example is made of linen, a fiber widely used in medieval Egypt due to its availability and suitability for hot climates. The decoration consists of woven tapestry bands with stylized inscriptions and geometric motifs executed in contrasting colors. These tiraz bands were often associated with status, court production, and official workshops, and they frequently contained blessings, honorific phrases, or the name of the ruler.
In our reconstruction, we preserve the structural simplicity and proportion of the original garment while faithfully recreating the placement and visual rhythm of the tiraz bands. The decorative elements are woven directly into the textile or carefully reproduced using historically accurate techniques. The base fabric remains breathable and natural, consistent with medieval Egyptian textile traditions.
Original Size Option (Museum Dimensions)
We also offer this tunic in the exact original dimensions of the preserved archaeological garment. This version follows the proportions of the museum piece without modern tailoring adjustments.
Due to its historical cut and generous width, the original-size version functions as a universal oversize garment that fits a wide range of body types. This reflects the authentic medieval approach to clothing, where loose construction allowed flexibility, comfort, and layering rather than fitted shaping.
This option is particularly recommended for:
Museum interpretation
Living history presentations
Collectors seeking maximum authenticity
Photographic and educational projects
Our work combines textile archaeology, preserved museum garments, and scholarly research on Fatimid weaving techniques, allowing us to create garments that are both source-based and wearable. The tunic can be worn as a standalone outer garment in warm climates or layered over a light undergarment.
