The dress from Gnezdovo is an unusual find on the scale of the early Middle Ages.
The bottom of the dress is one of the few finds of dyed linen, on which the color remained for over a thousand years. Blue is also the only intense color that linen was able to dye in the early Middle Ages - as you can see, very successfully.

Although the condition of the find itself could only please puzzle lovers, it was possible to put together a faulty dress from it, analyze it and draw conclusions about the likely cut. Namely, it was considered to be a framed dress, ruffled at the top and trimmed with a hem; the researchers suggested that the sleeves were also blue. The second find - this time from Pskov - was helpful in interpreting the typeface.
The voluminous robe, sewn from light and blue linen, is not only comfortable but also effective. Its shade is also remarkable - indigo, obtained, among others, from woad, which was used to dye the original fabric.

Our work combines archaeological evidence with iconographic sources—manuscript illustrations, reliefs, and early medieval visual representations—allowing us to create garments that are both source-based and functional.
