We present the effect of the paradox of recreating the poor.
What was once cheap and popular is now rare and expensive.
And we're talking about nettle fabric, which appeared on our website some time ago. Here, a shirt sewn by hand with yarn pulled from the fabric. Makes me want to plow the field!
Nettle fabric is suitable for all kinds of shirts, robes and underwear. In descriptions from the 12th century, it was presented as a material of lower value, only later its delicacy and properties were appreciated.
It is a perfect replacement for linen fabric, which was not a cheap material in the early Middle Ages.
Early medieval shirt - basic garment in early medieval costume.
Very popular in whole Europe. Sleeves are tapered to keep historical accuracy.
Almost all examples of early medieval nettle fabric found in Europe were undyded.
Fabric is pre washed, so it wouldn't shrink due to washing.
Our work combines archaeological evidence with iconographic sources—manuscript illustrations, reliefs, and early medieval visual representations—allowing us to create garments that are both source-based and functional. The tunic can be worn as a standalone outer garment or as a base layer under cloaks, coats, or mail.
